Some of those connections, which is what our Inquiry is about this term, were our trip to Mr McFarlane’s farm where we saw sheep, cows ,bulls and a helicopter. Seeing Whaea Anne and Harold the giraffe in the Life Education truck taught us about not bullying and being nice to others. We had an artist Matua Brandon Blair who came to school to talk about that and get us to draw posters too. We learnt about and practised using our WITS (Walk away, Ignore, Tell someone eg a teacher and make a Statement eg ‘Stop it ,I don’t like it.”) from Mrs Bennett. Some students made connections with Matua Manu and did Nga Toi, making kowhaiwhai patterns on rocks. We made other connections with the Preschool, Mrs Donaldson, the librarian, our whanau, Mr Twinn, Matua Torp, our buddies from other classes eg Buddy reading and sharing in oral language in R1, and Greg Murphy a formula 1 racing car driver (Whaea Monique-student teacher in R2s husband), who came to school to speak to us and show us all his racing gear. April
Goals
I am learning to read harder books and write stories. I want to learn to ride a scooter. (Hemara). I support Hemara by helping him develop his reading skills. He is in a small reading group of 4 so has a lot of individual attention. He has moved up 1 reading level this term so far. He has lots of opportunities to use a scooter in the playground and is getting better all the time. Hemara has improved in his storywriting structure and spelling. He needs to develop more self confidence in this area. Next Term we will extend the number of sentences that he can write and progress to harder levels in Reading (Mrs Bennett).
Walking Safely
Constable Phil is teaching us to walk safely. We are learning to cross the road safely. We know where to stand and know parts of the road such as the kerb and the gutter.
Duffy Role Model Assembly
We had Diana Queenin as our Duffy Role Model. She talked about Dinosaurs and showed us fossils. She also told us how important it is to read to helpour learning. The children loved the Duffy books that they chose.
ipads
I built a school with Huntah on the ipad. It shows lots of different places. I had to match the size and the shapes.(Kauri) As part of our Geometry unit in Maths the children had to build either a school or a house in pairs. They had to use attributes such as shapes, pattern, direction, size and colour. The children worked well together and enjoyed the activity. ( Mrs Bennett)
March
ipad Stories
I can make up a story on the ipad. I can make lots of people and record myself talking. I can write some words and letters too.( Hemara) I showed the children how to use the Tellagami app on the ipad. The children can make a variety of characters and change them accordingly. They can write words or record their voice. I circulate and assist if needed to support or help. Many of the children are quite independent in this app now. They tend to prefer to record rather than write words and love making lots of different characters. (Mrs Bennett)
Storywriting/ Masks
Hemara I have a mask. It is scary. Hemara selected the mask on the ipad that he wanted to have a photo with. He wrote about it and we published his caption and put the pictures on the classroom wall. The objective was to stimulate the children's imaginations. I encouraged him to think about what mask that he wanted. He liked this one as it was different to the others and scary. (Mrs Bennett)
Storywriting
I can do my own stories now. Mrs Bennett helps me with some spelling but I can do some words by myself.(Hemara) " We saw Harold the giraffe Tam and fruit Whaea Anne and a book." Hemara is trying to do his own stories. I am helping him with some structure and spelling. He needs, now, to keep on extending his thoughts and build up a vocabulary of words that he can attempt to spell and use in story-writing. ( Mrs Bennett)
Hakinakina Swimming Sports
We went to the Hakinakina sports. There were other schools there. It was hot on the bus.I liked the big pool.(Hemara) We all had a great afternoon at the Hakinakina Cluster swimming sports.
